What does a school counselor do?
• Assists in providing a proactive, developmental guidance program to all students.
• Provides counseling to individuals, classes and small groups.
• Responds to educations, career, personal and social concerns of students.
• Serves as a consultant and provide professional expertise to school personnel, parents and community members.
• Acts as a coordinator to bring people and resources together.
• Collaborates with school and district staff to assess and indentify students' abilities, interests and achievements.
• Analyzes test results to provide information about aptitude, achievement, interests and needs.
• Coordinates school-to-career programs with colleges and universities to provide information to students.
• Adheres to strict ethical and legal standards in the performance of these duties. -

• Transition to a new school
• Registration process and student orientation
• Achievement concerns
• Personal needs
• Crisis situations
• Personal graduation plans
• College and career planning
• Family transitions such as death, divorce, remarriage, new siblings, relocating from one city to another, etc. -
Who can refer a student to the school counselor?
• Students can do a self-referral.
• Teachers, administrators or staff referrals are available.
• Parent and peer referrals are acceptable.
• Counselor observation. -
