Courses are available to all students in Crowley ISD starting with Pre-AP in sixth grade and AP in ninth grade. Course offerings vary from campus to campus based on course demand.  CISD proudly follows the College Board’s Equity and Access Policy Statement, which reads: 

“The College Board strongly encourages educators to make equitable access a guiding principle for their AP programs by giving all willing and academically prepared students the opportunity to participate in AP. We encourage educators to:

Eliminate barriers that restrict access to AP for students from ethnic, racial, and socioeconomic groups that have been traditionally underserved. Provide all students with access to academically challenging coursework before they enroll in AP classes.

What is Advanced Placement?
The Advanced Placement program is a sequence of college-level courses taught in high schools by high school teachers with specialized training.

Benefits of Advanced Placement
Students who take AP courses will challenge themselves, sharpen their academic skills, and learn to think independently. Studies have shown that AP students are:

Better prepared academically for college admission on all measures of ability and achievement.
Able to perform significantly better over four years in college.
More likely to be leaders and have significant accomplishments.
Students with AP credit tend to get higher 1st year GPA than other students.
Students entering college with AP credit had an increased likelihood of returning the following fall in contrast to students who entered college with no college credit.

Acceptance of AP Scores for Admission, College Credit, and Course Placement
The AP Credit and Placement College and University Search at www.collegeboard.com/ap/creditpolicy allows colleges and universities to be looked up for review of their AP policies. Each college and university determines their own policy. These policies fluctuate based on the specific major and specific AP courses as well as whether an acceptable exam score is to be used for credit and/or placement in a sequence of courses. In 2015, Governor Abbott signed legislation granting college credit at Texas public colleges and universities for scores of 3 or higher.

The value of AP courses and AP exam scores beyond receiving credit for coursework includes the admissions process, particularly in a competitive school. For example, Duke University states: “As part of the applicant evaluation process, we assess the degree to which a student has challenged himself/herself academically. We determine the quality and rigor of a student's curriculum in several ways, including the number of AP courses the student has taken. We also use AP Exam results to help us understand a student's academic accomplishments.”

 

What does Pre-AP Mean?
The Pre-AP program in Crowley ISD is a level of challenging courses designed to teach students strong study skill and learning strategies. These courses build on the strengths of students and prepare them to experience success in Advanced Placement and other advanced academic courses.

Typically grades 6-10, offered district-wide
Teachers receive specialized training
Academically challenging
Emphasis is on critical thinking, reading, research, writing, and as appropriate, advanced performance expectations

Students are encouraged to take Pre-AP courses prior to enrolling in AP courses. The strategies and skills students learn in Pre-AP courses help them acquire content knowledge, provide a foundation for college readiness, and prepare them for success in Advanced Placement courses.
